Following earlier coverage on 7 News social media, Master Grocers Australia CEO Martin Stirling and illicit trade expert Rohan Pike were featured in the official Channel 7 Seven News evening broadcast on June 18, 2026, bringing the illicit alcohol crisis to a prime time national audience at 6:20pm.
The broadcast expanded on the urgent industry meeting held that afternoon between authorities, retailers and industry leaders, with many retailers described as too scared to open their doors amid fears the illicit alcohol market is rapidly escalating.
Rohan Pike warned that Victoria is saturated in crime that is fast seeping into the liquor industry, with organised crime emboldened by a low-risk enforcement environment. A long-standing family grocer with 52 years in business described receiving an extortion note — and having a car driven through the front of their building six days later after ignoring it.
Martin’s warning, first aired on 7 News social media earlier that day, reached a significantly wider prime time audience through the evening broadcast.
“Their staff don’t feel safe. Their businesses are at risk,” Martin said.
MGA continued to call for action beyond the state government’s recently announced $10 million taskforce, urging coordinated intervention at both state and federal level before the illicit alcohol market mirrors the devastation of the tobacco wars.
