MGA CEO Martin Stirling was featured in the ABC Radio Melbourne morning news bulletin, calling on governments to act on the growing illicit alcohol trade before it follows the same trajectory as the black market for tobacco.
The bulletin reported that retailers, law enforcement and illicit trade experts were set to meet in Melbourne that day to discuss how to get ahead of the problem, with MGA leading calls for urgent government action.
Martin called on the federal government to examine whether its alcohol excise settings were creating the conditions for organised crime to move in.
“We need to have a conversation at the federal level whether alcohol excise settings are creating incentives and opportunities for organised crime,” Martin said.
