MGA CEO Martin Stirling warns of inevitable price increases for Australian staples amid fuel crisis
Master Grocers Australia CEO Martin Stirling was quoted in the Daily Telegraph today warning that price increases on essential grocery staples are inevitable as the fuel crisis continues to devastate supply chains across the country.
In the article titled “Aussie shoppers warned to brace for 20 per cent supermarket price surge,” Martin outlined the severe pressure facing independent retailers, particularly those in rural and regional areas where greater transport distances compound the crisis.
“Our members are feeling incredible pressure from multiple angles, it is a true structural crisis,” Martin told the Telegraph. “It is inevitable that everything that is produced on a farm is going to increase in price, starting with fresh produce. That means meat, vegetables, bread, milk, the staples of Australian life are going to be more expensive.”
Martin also highlighted the structural vulnerabilities in Australia’s economy, noting that the nation has never been “so unprepared and so reliant on imports.” He called for Australia to use its natural resources to produce fuel and fertiliser onshore to better prepare for future crises.
The article warns that Australians could see price rises on fresh staples within weeks, with NSW Farmers economist Sam Miller suggesting increases of up to 20 per cent are just “the starting point.”
