Victorian retailers are calling on the state government to adopt stronger enforcement measures to tackle the illegal tobacco trade. Proposals include:

• Introducing yellow ‘shame’ stickers to publicly identify stores selling illicit products.
• Empowering authorities to immediately shut down non-compliant businesses for up to six months, pending court orders.

While recent legislation by Premier Jacinta Allen’s government imposes heavy penalties, there is concern that these measures alone won’t deter illegal activity without visible enforcement and decisive actions.
