Casual Employment Information Statement (CEIS)

As members may know, an employer must provide all new casual employees a Casual Employment Information Statement (CEIS) before, or as soon as possible after, they commence work. A CEIS which is a document that contains information about casual employment conditions and entitlements.

Under the new changes, an employer must now provide a CEIS to all new and existing casual employees in the following situations:

    1. For non-small business employers, the CEIS must be provided:

        (a) to new casual employees before, or as soon as practicable after, the employee commences employment;

        (b) to existing casual employees, as soon as practicable after:

            (i) they have completed six months of employment from the commencement date;

            (ii) they have completed 12 months of employment from the commencement date; and

            (iii) every subsequent period of 12 months of employment.

    2. For small business* employers, the CEIS must be provided:

        (a) to new casual employees before, or as soon as practicable after, the employee commences employment; and

        (b) to existing casual employees, as soon as practicable after they have completed 12 months of employment from the commencement date.

MGAIBA anticipates these changes will impose an administration burden on members as they will be required to monitor and provide casual employees with a CEIS at the relevant employment periods.

(*A small business is an employer with fewer than 15 employees at a particular time. When calculating the number of employees at a particular time, employees of associated entities and regular casual employees of the employer are included)
