MGA has made a submission to the Tasmanian Government’s Liquor Licensing Review as part of its ongoing advocacy for independent retailers.
MGA is calling for reform of outdated liquor laws that unfairly disadvantage independent supermarkets while favouring large national chains.
The submission recommends removing the current prohibition on supermarkets holding liquor licences and introducing a new, tightly regulated licence category exclusively for independent operators.
MGA firmly believes this targeted reform would restore competitive balance, support small business viability, help offset financial pressures from illicit tobacco, and strengthen local jobs and supply chains. Allowing independent supermarkets to sell liquor responsibly would keep profits local and deliver broader economic benefits to Tasmanian communities.
