In April, the Fair Work Commission (FWC) issued a Fuel Cost Recovery Order for parts of the road transport industry in response to rising diesel prices linked to conflict in the Middle East. The order requires fuel cost increases to be passed through road transport contractual chains, helping ensure independent transport contractors are not left bearing escalating operating costs.
The issue attracted significant national media attention, with MGA CEO Martin Dempsey Stirling highlighting the cumulative impact of rising transport costs on independent retailers. Through media interviews, MGA warned that increasing logistics expenses place further pressure on small businesses already managing higher operating costs and cost-of-living challenges.
While most independent retailers are unlikely to be directly affected by the order, businesses that directly engage independent transport contractors may have obligations under its provisions. Following an initial review, the Fair Work Commission consulted on proposed variations to the order and is now considering stakeholder submissions before determining whether any changes are required.
