The Federal Government this week announced the Illicit Tobacco National Disruption Group — a new national taskforce to crack down on the criminal networks behind the illicit tobacco trade.
Although we are frustrated that it has taken this long to establish, this is a long-awaited step forward and reflects years of advocacy from MGA and independent retailers who have seen firsthand the damage caused by illegal operators — from safety risks and intimidation to rising business costs.
The design and scope of the group is what is needed; however the crucial next step is to see rapid action – the group must start delivering immediately and we will continue to apply pressure to ensure it lives up to high expectations.
MGA will continue to ensure your voice is heard as the taskforce framework takes shape. Our priority is to make sure enforcement measures are effective, proportionate to the crisis which is unfolding, and informed by the distressing realities retailers face every day.
Next Steps
MGA will urge the Government to include direct consultation with the retail sector within the taskforce’s framework. We’ll keep members informed as this work progresses — including opportunities for you to share your experiences and contribute to stronger, evidence-based action.
