Stronger United in Hobart: 2025 AUR Liquor Conference

MGA Independent Businesses Australia was proud to attend the 2025 AUR Liquor Conference in Hobart from 28–31 October. Representing the organisation, MGA’s Chief Operating Officer, Mikaela McKenzie, had the pleasure of joining FoodWorks liquor retailers and suppliers from across the country for three days of discussion, insight, and connection. The conference, themed Stronger United, brought the AUR community together in one of Australia’s most picturesque cities for a program that balanced meaningful business conversations with genuine celebration of the independent liquor industry.

Connecting with Retailers and Suppliers

One of the strongest elements of the conference was the opportunity to meet face-to-face with retailers from all states and territories. These conversations highlighted the sector’s ongoing pressures, including operational costs, evolving customer behaviour, workforce challenges, and the rising importance of local differentiation.

Equally valuable were the discussions with suppliers who actively support and advocate for independents. The Supplier Showcase at The Hanging Garden — a standout event in the program — provided the ideal environment to explore upcoming category trends and new product development for independent liquor stores.

Business Sessions

The conference delivered relevant and practical business updates. Sessions explored consumer trends, premiumisation, operational efficiencies, and emerging strategies for store growth. The strength of open dialogue between retailers and suppliers reinforced the importance of collaboration across the independent channel.

Adam Gilchrist’s Tequila Launch

A memorable highlight for delegates was meeting Adam Gilchrist, Australian Cricket legend, who attended the event to launch his tequila brand – El Arquero (The Keeper). His genuine enthusiasm for the craft and the story behind the brand added a unique energy to the conference and sparked plenty of discussion and tastings among attendees.

Celebrating Community

From the welcome dinner at Mona to the Hobart Hop team challenge and the final dinner at Peppina, the conference delivered a true sense of camaraderie across the AUR network. Delegates embraced the opportunity to unwind, reconnect, and reflect on the year’s achievements

Looking Ahead

MGA thanks AUR for hosting such a valuable event and for the opportunity to connect with so many liquor retailers and suppliers in one place. The insights gathered in Hobart will directly support our ongoing work to advocate for, strengthen, and celebrate Australia’s independent liquor industry.
