MGA CEO Martin Stirling quoted in AAP article warning of potential grocery price increases amid fuel crisis
MGA Independent Businesses Australia CEO Martin Stirling was quoted in an AAP article today addressing concerns about potential price increases for independent supermarkets and grocers as global supply chain challenges intensify.
The article, titled “Double whammy: food prices warning over war fuel shock,” examines the impact of war-induced fuel supply disruptions on Australian farmers and retailers, with shipping through the Strait of Hormuz being severely affected by escalating conflict in the Middle East.
Martin acknowledged that while global supply chain challenges have not yet directly impacted independent supermarkets and grocers, smaller retailers would have no choice but to pass on any transportation or wholesale cost increases if the situation continues.
“Passing on price increases is a last resort,” Martin told AAP. “They absorb what they can but they’re under incredible cost pressures at the moment.”
The article also featured warnings from National Farmers’ Federation president Hamish McIntyre, who cautioned that costs on perishable goods such as dairy, fruit and vegetables could rise by 40 to 50 per cent if constraints on fuel and fertiliser continue.
