From 1 January 2026, the Federal Government’s cash acceptance mandate for essential purchases, including groceries and fuel, is now in effect.
Under the new regulations, most grocery and fuel retailers will be required to accept cash for in-person transactions of $500 or less, between 7am and 9pm.
For the majority of MGA members, this is unlikely to result in any operational change, as cash is already widely accepted in independent stores to meet customer needs.
Key points members should note:
- The mandate applies from 1 January 2026
- Cash must be accepted for in-person transactions of $500 or less
- Trading hours covered are 7am to 9pm
- Small businesses with annual turnover under $10 million are exempt, unless they share a trademark with a larger retailer
- The Government will review the mandate after three years
As you may recall, MGA made a formal submission on behalf of members setting out concerns around practical implementation, safety, costs and operational impacts for independent retailers. While the Government has proceeded with the mandate, MGA will continue to press for outcomes that recognise the realities faced by independent retailers.
We will continue to keep members informed as further guidance becomes available.
