The article reported on the Victorian government’s introduction of the Crimes Amendment (Retail, Fast Food, Hospitality and Transport Worker Harm) Bill 2025, aimed at protecting customer-facing workers from violence and aggression. Under the new legislation, offences such as intimidation, assault, or threats against retail workers will carry penalties of six months to five years imprisonment. Ram-raids will be reclassified as aggravated burglary, with sentences of up to 25 years.
MGA CEO Martin Stirling welcomed the bill, stressing the need for fast implementation and enforcement to ensure worker safety. He called for additional measures, including dedicated police forces and expedited workplace protection orders. The Australian Retailers Association and National Retail Association also supported the legislation, urging bipartisan cooperation and highlighting the need for a full-scale strategy to combat retail crime.
