Inside FMCG, a leading publication for Australia’s fast-moving consumer goods sector, featured MGA Independent Businesses Australia’s urgent call for a Senate inquiry into the country’s growing illicit tobacco trade.
MGA warns that what was once minor offending has escalated into a “highly criminal industry” operating openly and aggressively nationwide.
CEO Martin Stirling described the situation as a “national embarrassment,” citing firebombings, ram-raids, extortion, and threats against small retailers. These crimes are causing severe financial losses and psychological strain, while billions in excise revenue are being siphoned into organised crime.
MGA argues that a Senate inquiry is critical to quantify the scale of the problem and drive coordinated federal and state action. The association is demanding tougher penalties, stronger enforcement, and clear protections for small businesses to ensure their safety and survival.
