Independent retailers are sounding the alarm over Australia’s booming illicit tobacco trade, which now accounts for an estimated 55% of all tobacco sales.
Industry leaders warn the black market has evolved into a highly organised criminal network, draining millions from legitimate businesses, eroding tax revenue, and fueling violence.
MGA Independent Businesses Australia reports that firebombings, ram-raids, intimidation, and extortion attempts are becoming disturbingly common. CEO Martin Stirling has called the situation a “national embarrassment,” urging a Senate inquiry to expose the true scale of the crisis and implement protections for small businesses.
Retailers say the impact is both economic and personal, with billions in lost excise and family business owners living in fear. MGA is demanding tougher penalties, coordinated enforcement, and immediate action to safeguard retailers.
