Karl Loh inducted into IBA Hall of Fame

More than four decades in independent liquor retailing have earned Karl Loh a place among the industry’s most respected leaders, with his contribution recognised through his induction into the IBA Hall of Fame for 2026.

The honour was announced at the recent IBA Trade Workshop, where Karl became the fifth member of the Hall of Fame – an accolade reserved for individuals who have made an enduring contribution to independent liquor retailing.

Karl began his career more than 40 years ago as Store Manager at Ritchies’ Nepean Highway store in Frankston, Victoria. He progressed through a number of leadership roles, including Area Manager, before becoming General Manager of Liquor.

Today, he leads the Ritchies liquor business as it continues to evolve in a rapidly changing retail environment.

Throughout his career, Karl has remained focused on what he believes makes independent retailing different: passionate people, strong supplier relationships, putting customers first and creating a store experience that is dynamic and distinctive.

Under his leadership, the Ritchies liquor network has continued to grow and modernise, embracing innovation while maintaining the values that have helped make Ritchies an iconic Australian independent business.

Karl’s contribution extends beyond the day-to-day operation of the business. He has been a passionate advocate for independent liquor retailers and has represented the sector through his involvement with MGA as a valued member of the MGA Liquor  Advisory Committee, bringing practical retail experience and a considered perspective to industry discussions.

He has also served on the Victorian IGA Liquor Committee for more than 25 years and contributed to the Victorian and NSW IGA groups.

For those who have worked alongside Karl, his influence is measured not simply by business results, but by the relationships he has built along the way.

He is widely respected for his calm approach, measured decision-making and willingness to share his knowledge and experience. His commitment to strong supplier partnerships has helped foster a culture of trust, transparency and long-term collaboration.

Karl has never been one to seek the spotlight. His focus has consistently been on the business, the people around him and the opportunities available to independent retailers.

That was reflected in the words shared at his induction, which recognised his “enduring, persistent commitment to independent liquor retailing”, his focus on improving the shopper experience and supplier engagement, and the respect he has earned across the industry.

Away from liquor retailing, Karl is also passionate about basketball and continues to coach – another way he supports and develops others.

The Hall of Fame induction was celebrated alongside Karl’s wife, Debbie, their four children, the Ritchies team, supplier partners and fellow retailers – a fitting reflection of the many people who have been part of his journey.

After more than 40 years in the industry, Karl’s legacy extends beyond the businesses he has helped grow. It can be seen in the people he has influenced, the partnerships he has strengthened and his ongoing commitment to the future of independent retailing.

MGA congratulates Karl on this well-deserved recognition and induction into the IBA Hall of Fame. As a longstanding member of MGA’s Liquor Advisory Committee, Karl has been an invaluable voice for independent liquor retailers, and we are fortunate to continue benefiting from the wealth of knowledge, experience and insights he generously shares with us.
