New digital Proof of Age ID launching in Victoria

A new digital Proof of Age credential is coming to the Service Victoria app, allowing Victorians aged 15 and over to present their Proof of Age as a digital identity card.

For retailers, particularly those selling age-restricted products, it is important to understand how the new credential can be checked and what this means for staff verifying customers’ ages.

You may begin to see customers showing Proof of Age as a form of identification once the feature becomes available in the Services Victoria app.

Digital Proof of Age has built-in electronic verification features, allowing you to:

  • visually check the digital card on a customer’s phone
  • scan the credential using compatible ID-scanning systems.

These features are designed to make the verification process fast, secure and reliable.

To help you prepare, the Victorian Government is hosting online information sessions for businesses and other ID verifiers. You’ll learn:

  • how digital Proof of Age works
  • what to look for when checking the ID
  • how scanning and e-verification functions operate
  • what to do if you’re unsure about a digital ID.
