Industry leaders tackle the issues shaping independent retail

The MGA Industry Breakfast 2026 brought retailers, suppliers and industry stakeholders together yesterday for a morning of discussion and insights on the key issues shaping independent businesses.

The program covered the economic and political outlook, workplace relations and the challenges of operating and leading independent businesses in today’s environment.

Economist Dr Adam Triggs, Mandala Partners, provided an overview of the economic landscape, while Fair Work Commissioner Leyla Yilmaz shared insights into current workplace issues and developments.

Heidi Murphy (9News) facilitated a political discussion with Bev McArthur MP, exploring the broader political and policy environment affecting independent businesses.

The Independent Retail Leaders Panel brought a practical perspective from the sector, with Wayne Harrison (Ritchies IGA), Raelene Hopper (HG Retail) and Geoff Dahlsen (Dahlsens Family Companies) sharing their experiences and perspectives on leading independent businesses.

The discussions also generated significant media interest throughout the day, providing an opportunity for MGA to amplify the issues facing independent businesses and ensure the sector’s perspective was part of the broader public conversation.

Importantly, the event also provided an opportunity for retailers to connect with their peers, share experiences and discuss the challenges and opportunities facing independent businesses. These conversations are an important part of bringing the industry together and ensuring members can learn from the experiences of others.

MGA thanks all speakers, panellists, sponsors and members who attended and contributed to a valuable morning of industry discussion.
