The Victorian Government is introducing a ban on machete sales, effective from 12:00 noon on Wednesday, 28 May 2025. This is an interim step in a broader effort to reduce knife-related violence and improve public safety across Victoria.

What’s Happening

From midday Wednesday 28 May, it will be a criminal offence in Victoria to:

• Sell or offer a machete for sale
• Possess a machete with the intent to sell

The interim sale ban applies statewide and to all retail suppliers, without exception. It is being introduced under emergency powers available through Commonwealth consumer law, which allow a state Minister to ban the sale of a product for a limited period.

This ban is a step forward to the full legislative prohibition on both the sale and possession of machetes, which comes into effect on 1 September 2025.

What’s Banned

The interim sale ban will cover machetes, which are broadly described as a cutting edge knife with a blade of more than 20 centimetres. The interim sale ban does not include knives primarily used in kitchens.

There will be no exemptions to allow the sale of machetes during the interim sale ban – Australian consumer law doesn’t allow it. It is a total ban on sales.

Retailer Responsibilities

Retailers must take the following actions by 12:00 noon, Wednesday 28 May:

• Immediately remove all machetes from display and discontinue any online sales or promotions
• Secure unsold stock in a safe location, pending further advice on disposal, exemption schemes, or amnesty arrangements
• Ensure compliance, as continuing to sell or display machetes after the ban comes into effect may constitute a criminal offence

Further information will be provided ahead of the permanent prohibition in September.

What’s Coming Next

From 1 September 2025, machetes will be formally classified as prohibited weapons under the Control of Weapons Act. Key changes include:

• Illegal to possess or sell, unless covered by a specific exemption
• Individuals and businesses will be required to apply for a government-approved exemption if they need to retain or use a machete for legitimate purposes

Penalties for non-compliance will include fines exceeding $47,000 or up to two years’ imprisonment.

Amnesty Period: 1 September – 30 November 2025

From 1 September 2025, machetes will be formally classified as prohibited weapons under the Control of Weapons Act. Key changes include:

• Illegal to possess or sell, unless covered by a specific exemption
• Individuals and businesses will be required to apply for a government-approved exemption if they need to retain or use a machete for legitimate purposes

Penalties for non-compliance will include fines exceeding $47,000 or up to two years’ imprisonment.
