Victorian Digital Licences – What does it mean for licenced retailers?
After a successful trial in Ballarat, Victorians will now have the option to carry their digital licence on their phone and is recognised as an acceptable form as proof of identity or prove they are over 18 years of age.
Currently only Victorian full licence holders can download their digital licence. Learner drivers and p-platers will be able to download their digital licence by 2025.
As a liquor retailer if a person looks under 25, you can now accept digital licences as a legal form of a person’s identification, along with a physical license card, keypass card, proof of age card, marine licence and an Australian or foreign passport.
To check a digital licence, ask the person to:
- Pull down on their details screen to refresh
- Show you their photo
- Show you their licence number
- Show you the hologram
- Show you the QR code to scan if you need further verification ***
*** Note: to check the QR code staff need to have already downloaded the Services Victoria and MyVicRoads app to their phone.
It is not mandatory to accept a digital licence, and should you choose, you can still ask for a physical card licence or any of the other approved forms of identification.
